If every yeur were leap year and women could be brought to avail themselves of the time-honored privilege of proposing to the ' men of their choice, instead of 1 waiting for . men t o pro pose to them, we should be far . along the road toward a regenerate society. There is no doubt that the selec tion of a husband should really ! rest with the woman. In the an ; imal w orld it is invariably the fe 1 male that chooses her mate. I Only in the human race is the ; right of selection arbitrarily given . to the male. Taking the divorce I records of this country for the last : twelve months as guide, we can ! hardly believe that he has made a i brilliant success of it. I Left to herself and with no hatn j pering conventions to interfere, ' woman would be a most discrimi- nating chooser. With all sorts of i men to select from, she would be in no sort of hurry to mate with the first little man that popped I the question. i Women love physical perfection, i With her right to select unques j tioned, the American woman I would pick out a man of her own i physical ideal, woo him with all ! the varied arts and fascinations at j her disposal, and, nine times out ! of ten, gel him. Physically the race would be greatly benefited. There are many thousands of women in this coun try who have married men just be- , cause they were asked, and, who now live the live of housekeep- i ing drudges, bound to the so-called I home only by the stern dictates of duty. ; Sometimes Mr. Right comes along, years after, when the love j less marriage has produced compli : cations in the way of children. Then the housekeeper drudge is ; suddenly transformed into a wo man with a heart to love and suf fer once more. If she be a very strong woman she continues in the j narrow path Of duty to the end. If she be weak and the man in the case unscrupulous, there is an other case for the divorce court to wrestle with and for sociologists to ponderover. And where, after all, is the harm done ? ' I believe we were made to be gay, And all of youth not given to love Is vainly squandered away. And strewn through Life's low labors, Like gold in the desert sands, Are love's swift kisses and sighs and vows And the clasp of clinging hands. And when you are old and lonely, In Memory's magic shrine You will see on your thin and wasting hands, Like gems, these kisses of mine. And when you muse at evening At the sound of some vanished name, The ghost of my kisses shall touch your lips And kindle your heart to flame. BY RF.V. GliO. When the frost is on your locks and time's furrows on your cheeks, When a voice from out the silence to your inner spirit speaks, When every sense within you tells of sure and quick decay Can you meet death's stern monitions without murmur or dismay ? And the sweet and cheering promise, When you reach the heavenly landing and the pearly gates unclose, And the golden city's radiance to your ravished eyes disclose Do the friends who wait to greet you, all extend the welcome hand, While to celebrate the greeting all the hosts of heaven stand ? When brought before the dazzling x'j you hear from heaven's Great done" i Thou hast run thy race with patience, thou hast kept my sacred word, Now enter thou the fullness of the glory of thy Lord ? TO YOUNO MEN. If young men desire success in life in the purest and truest sense of the term Success that culminates in a noble, stainless life, enduring, i exalting and immortalizing even I after passing over the Unseen it is certainly very essential that their 1 characters be founded unwavering j upon the broad and enduring prin , ciples of religion. An unbeliever I may become a great man, without i doubt, if he has the energy, ambi ; tion and talent; but an intellect of i the highest order must be based j upon Christianity. There exists in the present age so many tempta I tions to lead the young, the pleas- ure-loving and thoughtless astray, j and such an utter disregard ofhon- esty, virtue and truth among many of our leading men, that wide field of usefulness is open to the honest and upright in heart. Why should not you, young men, just stepping upon the arena of life, bring your influence to bear with a strong hand and a clear head in the correction and punishment of many great evils? Will you do it? KNEW THE LADY. "My dear Mr. Kraft," said the hostess, "won't you induce your wife to sing for us?" "I guess we can manage it," re plied Mr. Kraft. "I think she'll doit." "Ah! you will ask her to?" "No, I'll ask her not to." A woman can like most any novel if it couldn't have happened in real life. HAY. PHAY you, pardon me, lilsie, And smile that frown away That dims the light of your lovely face As a thunder-cloud the day. I really could not help it, Before I thought, 'twas done And those great gray eyes Hashed bright and cold, Like an icicle in the sun. I was thinking of the Summers When we were boys and girls, And wandered in the blossoming woods And the gay winds romped with your curls. And you seemed to me the same little girl 1 kissed in the alder-path ; I kissed the little girl's lips, and alas ! I have roused a woman's wrath. There is not so much to pardon, For why were your lips so red ? The blonde hair fell in a shower of gold From the proud, provoking head. And the beauty that flashed from the splendid eyes, C. Touching Lines on the Suffering and Death of a Poor Canine that Had Been Poisoned. All lovers of dogs, and there arc but few who are not, will read with interest the lines written by Kdgar Howard, editor of the Columbus. Neb., Telegram. Some human 1 cur poisoned his faithful friend and when our readers have finished reading Mr. Howard's article on the death of his best friend and constant companion, they need j not be told that the writer is a mas ' ter of the language of words, even as he is a master of the language i of love. He says : "Bix is dead. Bix was a dog j in the animal kingdom but a tall I man in the attributes of kindness j and loyalty. He never spoke about his own virtues, but he showed them in his every-day life. 1 I wish I might know the man who gave the deadly poison to my dog. I have no desire to carry physical j injury to that man, but only a de-! sire to make him a better and a gentler man by painting for him a ; picture of poor Bix and his suf-, ferings. For many days under skillful treatment of a veterinary, and the nursing of those who loved him, Bix fought against the effects of the drug, never complaining, never showing resentment, re-' warding every effort in his behalf '. w ith a wag of his tail or with an expression of thanks from his kindly eye. In the last effort of his life he dragged himself to my feet, raised his drooping muzzle and laid it in my hand, as oft I've seen a child repose a weary head on its mother's knee. Thus he died, and in the death-gaze upon his brown eyes I thought I read a mes sage of pardon for the whipping 1 gave him one day, w hen anger had driven from my head that fair sense of reason which should di rect the movements of men, if not of dogs. I have never been able to accept the teachings of those an cients who held that at death-time the souls of men and women some times are transferred to the bodies of birds and dogs, but if I could accept that view I should then be lieve that one day there lived upon the earth a rare and radiant soul within the body of the gentlest wo man that ever came to brighten and to bless the earth with her good presence and that when she died the death of the body the gods transferred her soul to the body of poor Bix, so gracious and good he was. But 1 can't believe such things, and all that is left for me now is to give Bix in my memory garden a place among the roses with a promise and a pledge to strive to make my own life among men reflect somewhat the lesson in loyalty and kindness acquired by contact with my dog. And so, good Bix, goodbye." A weak stomach means weak stom- ; ach nerves, always. And this isalso true i ol the heart and kidneys. It's a pity j that sick ones continue'todrmrthc stom ach or stimulate the lieait and kidneys. The weak nerves, not the organs them selves, need this help. This explains whyjli slump's Itcstotative lias, ami is proiuptlv helping so many sick ones, it goes direct to the cause of these dis eases. Test this vital test and see. ! All Dealers. One of our good neighbors, who claims she can interpret "baby talk," vouches for the triilli!'u!iit.ss of the following having fallen from the hps of a sweet little blu-.som of humanity that recently came to a home in our city : "1 am here.
